Chinese Export silver pierced large presentation bowl

A large and finely worked Chinese Export silver presentation bowl. The pierced and repousse worked body has four dragons cavorting in the clouds – including one breathing fire. Two dragons chase the magic pearl which forms a reserve for engraving. Dragons symbolize strength and virility and were a popular motif in Chinese Export silver. These dragons have four claws – normally reserved for the mandarins but often used by silversmiths working with the foreigners. Bowl alone weighs 660 grams ; 23.3 ounces The bowl has a contemporary green glass liner.
