Happy Lunar New Year!
This extra-large presentation bowl, dated Spring 1900, is a stunning example of Chinese Export silver craftsmanship, likely created for a special wedding or anniversary.
The bowl features six intricately decorated panels, each depicting symbolic motifs: birds, chrysanthemums with butterflies (representing nuptial bliss), bamboo with a golden pheasant (for resilience and auspiciousness), irises with more butterflies (symbolizing fruitfulness), and an owl (for wisdom).
The other two panels display a dragon and a phoenix ( the femail ersion of the dragon) – a motif typically reserved for imperial use.
The bowl stands on cast base in the form of chrysanthemums, symbolizing endurance.
The fact that there are eight panels adds to symbolism. The number eight has many meanings, including infinity, prosperity and balance
The interior of the bowl retains much of the original gilding. The bowl could be used for serving food, as a champagne cooler or..?
Engraved on the base are the names of ten individuals who gifted the bowl. One of the names is Peerenboom and there is a Maria Peerenboom who was married in 1900 – was she the lucky recipient ?,
Who ever received it hopefully had an extra special marriage
This bowl exemplifies the exceptional quality and artistry of Chinese Export silver, with its rich symbolism and meticulous design, making it a treasured heirloom.
