Think of the butler! He never cleaned silver. It was used every day washed, wiped with soft cloth and used the next day. Soft cloths still work for a weekly clean but since we don’t use silver all the time it gets tarnished and needs something extra.
There are various silver cleaning products on the market. Use any of these sparingly and always with a soft cloth to make the final polish.
If there is a stubborn black mark then try using a product meant for another metal- brass maybe? – But only with sterling silver items.
The veneer on silver plated pieces will disappear.
Whatever you do never use a rough cloth or that two sided kitchen sponge to clean silver.
