Description

A Chinese silver box that arrived in 1871 to the Netherlands almost certainly via Batavia

This box is a mystery .

Almost certainly crafted for the local Chinese market rather than the export market ,the workmanship is amazing

The detailed tranquil scenes in the shaped lozenges on either side of the box are so crisp and detailed

The cast foo dog  finial with the ball is so beautifully worked .  Foo dogs  represent luck, royal and prosperity and are widely used in imperial palace as well as among the general people and are rarely found on Chinese Export silver items

The bats with rings in their mouths is also auspicious. “Bat” has the same sound as “fortune ” in Chinese so symbolises good luck

The soft camphored finish on the outside of the box retains much of the original gilding.  The interior has all the original gilding

This fine Chinese silver box definitely has a story to tell….
