A Chinese Export silver bowl with a difference!
The silversmith has repousse worked all the auspicious flower motifs against a sand mat background- a style popular in the last years of the 19th century
The workmanship of this export silver bowl is fine and the depiction of the flower motifs is particularly accurate.
There are irises (for hope wisdom and valour ) , chrysanthemums ( for love, longevity and happiness) , peonies
(for prosperity and luck).
The final flowers are roses – rarely found on Chinese Export silver pieces. This must have been a specially commissioned bowl .
The rose is known as “the queen of flowers,” and much of the rose’s symbolism reflects its regal title. Roses symbolise love, royalty, beauty, sensuality, secrecy, and mysticism. They are also associated with achievement and perfection.
There is a round reserve for engraving .
